Description

Some descriptionGoals: Anxiety Reduction, Insomnia Relief, Deep Sleep, Migraine, Heat Intolerance, Sleep & Awaken
History: Lemon balm has been cultivated and used for over 2000 years. The Greeks referred to it as “bee-leaf” (μελισσόφυλλον). It was formally introduced into Europe in the 7th century and gained popularity throughout the Middle Ages. The Tudors even scattered its leaves across their floors. Lemon balm was especially cultivated for honey production, as bees were thought never to leave a garden where it grew.
Daily Intake: The leaves can be eaten, up to 10 grams a day.
Supplementation: A small pilot study found that consuming a sweetened water-based drink containing 0.3 grams of lemon balm extract reduced stress and improved mood in healthy young adults. Participants reported feeling the anxiety-reducing effects within one to three hours after consumption. Lemon balm, combined with valerian root, significantly improved sleep quality in menopausal women compared to a placebo. The compound rosmarinic acid in lemon balm is thought to enhance sleep.
